Kotona: At home with MattoMatti founder Matti Vilhunen

Pino's new Kotona series begins at the home of MattoMatti founder Matti Vilhunen in Kontula, Helsinki. Matti has renovated the apartment to make it his own. On the home tour, we see his Moroccan rugs, other finds and the stories behind them.
The home comes first
Kotona is a series about homes and the people who live in them. We visit entrepreneurs, artists and other makers to see the spaces they inhabit and the objects they choose to live with. In the first episode, Matti's home leads the way. We walk through the apartment, look at the changes he has made and pause at the pieces that have found a place there.
The home tour is the heart of the episode. The rooms, rugs and collected objects also offer a way into Matti's changing interests over the years.
A connection to Morocco, seen in the rugs
The MattoMatti story began with Matti's interest in Morocco. He first travelled there in 2017 and brought his first rugs to Finland the following year. The idea later became MattoMatti, which works with Moroccan weavers and sells rugs beyond Finland.
At home, the rugs are part of everyday life. In the episode, Matti shows the Moroccan rugs and other finds in his apartment. The full tour gives us time to see these pieces in the space where he lives, beyond a product photograph. Read the MattoMatti story.
MattoMatti, seen from home
Matti was previously involved in Rupla in Helsinki’s Kallio district and later worked at Kela. His interest in rugs found in Morocco eventually led him to build MattoMatti. In Kotona, his story as an entrepreneur runs alongside the home tour. We see the rugs and other objects in the place where he lives.
