About the designer

Eero Aarnio

Eero Aarnio brought a new scale, colour and material language to Finnish furniture in the 1960s. Rather than limiting modern design to wood and restrained geometry, he explored fibreglass and plastics as materials for self-contained, sculptural forms. The Design Museum in Helsinki identifies the Ball Chair as the work that brought Aarnio international recognition.

The Ball Chair was first made in 1963 and presented internationally at the Cologne Furniture Fair in 1966. Its fibreglass outer shell and upholstered interior create a chair that also functions as a small architectural space. Aarnio continued to investigate related ideas through transparent, suspended and moulded designs. Manufacturer, label, shell construction, base, upholstery and production period are all important when assessing an individual vintage example.

Large moulded pieces require condition checks that go beyond the upholstery. Pino considers the shell, finish, base and attachment points as well as any renewed interior material. Surface marks and colour variation can be consistent with age, while repairs or later upholstery should be understood separately. We describe the known details for each available piece and can provide additional images or measurements before purchase.

Explore the active collection above, compare sold examples in the Pino Archive, or read the permanent Eero Aarnio Ball Chair guide. If you are looking for a specific edition or colour, start a sourcing request.

The Ball Chair’s fame has also made careful identification important. Pino does not rely on shape alone: manufacturer information, labels and construction details are considered before a piece enters the collection. If we are not confident that a piece is authentic, we do not offer it for sale.
