Gillis Lundgren

Gillis Lundgren was both a designer and an important product strategist in IKEA’s early development. IKEA Museum records that he joined the company in 1954 and contributed hundreds of products across a long career. His work ranges from highly practical storage to more experimental seating, showing how broad the design culture inside early IKEA could be.

The Impala seating family is a particularly distinctive example. IKEA Museum dates its launch to 1971 and describes a low chrome base paired with brightly coloured cushions and an unusually fashion-conscious form. The series became an immediate success, but its complex and expensive production meant it remained in the range for only a short period. That limited history makes surviving examples especially useful to compare carefully.

Impala chairs, sofas and related tables can differ in upholstery, finish and condition. Original soft materials may have aged or been replaced, while chrome surfaces and structural connections show their own patterns of use.
