Few chairs are quite as recognisable as the Eames Lounge Chair. Designed by Charles and Ray Eames and introduced in 1956, it has become one of the most loved pieces of modern furniture design.
The idea was to create a chair that felt warm, familiar and deeply comfortable. Charles Eames famously compared the feeling they were after to a well-worn baseball glove. The finished chair combined moulded plywood shells, soft leather cushions and a relaxed, reclined seating position.
A chair designed for comfort
The Eames Lounge Chair was a departure from much of the earlier work by Charles and Ray Eames. Instead of creating a lightweight and affordable chair for mass production, they wanted to make something more luxurious, substantial and personal.
The chair was first produced in the United States by Herman Miller. Its combination of sculpted wooden shells and removable upholstered cushions made it technically innovative, but it was the comfort and character of the chair that made it last.
Nearly seventy years later, the design still feels remarkably current. It works just as naturally in a modern apartment as it does in a more traditional interior, and the materials tend to become even more beautiful with age.
One of our most requested pieces
At Pino Interiors, the Eames Lounge Chair is one of the pieces we are asked about most often. We source them regularly, but they rarely stay with us for very long.
Sometimes a chair is already reserved before we even have time to photograph it or add it to the website. Good examples with the matching ottoman are especially sought after.
This time, however, nobody was waiting in line.
We currently have a particularly beautiful vintage example available, complete with its matching ottoman and original Herman Miller markings. The black leather has developed the kind of soft character that only comes with time, while the wooden shells give the chair its warm and unmistakable appearance.
