Living with the Eames Lounge Chair

The Eames Lounge Chair is recognisable even from behind. Curved wooden shells, upholstered cushions and a separate ottoman create a piece around which an entire reading corner can take shape. Choosing one should still begin with everyday use, rather than its reputation alone.

Comfort was the starting point

That intention helps explain its place in a home. A Lounge Chair invites a pause. It might belong beside bookshelves, near a view or in a quieter part of the living room. The right position depends on whether you want to read, listen to music or remain part of the conversation.

Plan for the chair and ottoman together

The chair’s width does not tell you how much room the complete arrangement needs. Measure the ottoman and the space between the two. Keep a route through the room, and make sure a small table and reading light remain within reach when you are sitting back.

Mark out the furniture on the floor before buying. Use the measurements of the particular example you are considering: different sizes and production periods may be offered together in the vintage market. Let the wooden shells be part of the room

The chair does not have to sit against a wall. A more open position reveals the wooden shells and can define a seating area without a broad, solid upholstered back. In that arrangement, the condition and colour of the rear matter as much as the front. A detail barely visible in a product photograph may become the first thing you see at home.

Black leather and wood can sit alongside a soft rug or lighter textiles. If the room already contains several wood finishes, compare the tones together. They need not match exactly, but seeing the relationship is more useful than judging each piece on a separate screen.

Try the actual chair

A design’s reputation cannot tell you how a decades-old cushion feels. Sit in the chair if possible. Notice the support behind your neck and back, the height of the armrests and where your feet meet the ottoman.

Ask for the restoration history and photographs of shell edges, the underside and joints. Herman Miller describes rubber connections and removable cushions as part of its current construction.
