Vintage Alvar Aalto Artek 69 Warleg Chair
The Artek 69 chair by Alvar Aalto is a classic of Finnish functionalism, but this rare wartime version takes it to another level for collectors. Produced in the 1940s, it features the so-called “war leg” construction, where the iconic L-leg is built from separate pieces joined with visible finger joints instead of a continuous bent laminate. This solution was developed during the Second World War, when there were shortages of glue and materials and it was not always possible to manufacture the usual bent legs.
The result is a chair that still clearly reads as Aalto, but with an even more graphic and architectural leg detail. The patinated birch frame and honest construction make this piece feel both robust and refined. It works beautifully as a standalone accent chair, at a desk, or as the centerpiece of a focused Aalto collection.
