Alvar Aalto Stool E60 in White for Artek

Alvar Aalto designed the four-legged Stool E60 for Artek in 1934. Made in Finland from birch, this version is finished throughout in white lacquer, giving the familiar round seat and curved legs a particularly clean and understated appearance.

The E60 developed Aalto’s earlier three-legged Stool 60 into a steadier four-legged form while retaining the same economical construction and sculptural clarity. Its characteristic L-leg, created by bending a laminated section of solid birch through 90 degrees, allowed the legs to be fixed directly beneath the seat without a separate supporting frame. This innovation became one of the defining elements of Aalto’s furniture for Artek.

Solid birch is used for the four legs and the edge of the circular seat, with birch also forming the seat structure. The compact proportions and stackable construction make the stool highly versatile: it can serve as seating, a small occasional table, a bedside surface or a display stand. When stacked, the four bent legs create the distinctive spiralling profile associated with the model.

These examples retain their original all-white lacquered finish and present very cleanly. Two stools are available, each sold individually.
