Yrjö Kukkapuro Experiment Lounge Chair in Black Leather and Green Armrests
The Experiment lounge chair was designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro in 1982 for Avarte and stands as one of the clearest postmodern moments in Finnish furniture design. First introduced during the early 1980s, the series marked a more expressive direction in Kukkapuro’s work, combining his ergonomic thinking with a bold and almost graphic visual language.
This example comes in its original condition, with black leather upholstery, chrome tubular steel frame and sculptural green lacquered plywood armrests. The flowing armrests are the defining feature of the Experiment chair, giving the otherwise geometric frame a strong sense of movement and character. The green armrests contrast beautifully with the black leather and chrome structure, making this version especially striking.
A particularly important part of this chair is its provenance. This piece originally comes from Yrjö Kukkapuro’s own atelier, giving it a direct connection to the designer’s working environment and making it a strong collector’s piece.
