Gastone Rinaldi Sabrina Chairs for RIMA, Italy, 1970s
The Sabrina chair was designed by Italian designer Gastone Rinaldi for RIMA around 1970. A distinctive example of Italian modernist design, the chair combines a sculptural chrome-plated tubular steel frame with softly padded black leather upholstery.
The continuous cantilever frame forms the base, armrests and supporting structure, giving the chair a visually light profile and a gentle flexibility when seated. The exposed chrome framework around the seat and across the back creates a particularly architectural appearance, while the generously padded leather provides comfortable support.
These examples have developed a beautiful vintage patina, with natural creasing and variation across the black leather. The contrast between the aged upholstery and polished chrome gives the chairs a strong yet refined character. They work especially well as dining chairs, conference chairs or individual statement pieces.
