Ben af Schulten Model 411 Armchair for Artek, 1970s
Model 411 armchair designed by Ben af Schulten for Artek in the 1970s. The chair combines a sculptural bent birch frame with a suspended cognac-brown leather seat and backrest, creating a distinctive balance between Finnish modernist design and more relaxed, natural materials.
The frame is defined by its softly curved armrests and rounded construction, while the leather upholstery is attached around the wooden rails with visible stitching. The flexible leather seat and backrest give the chair a comfortable, lightweight feel, and the simple construction allows the materials and craftsmanship to remain clearly visible.
Over time, the leather has developed a warm and expressive patina, including natural colour variation, marks and traces of use. These signs of age give each chair its own individual character and work beautifully together with the light tone of the birch frame.
Model 411 is a less commonly seen Artek design and an excellent example of Ben af Schulten’s understated approach to furniture. The chair works equally well as a dining chair, occasional chair or a characterful standalone piece in a living room, bedroom or workspace.
