Eero Aarnio Ball Chair

Eero Aarnio first made the Ball Chair in 1963, and the design reached an international audience at the Cologne Furniture Fair in 1966. The Design Museum in Helsinki identifies it as the work that established Aarnio’s international reputation. Its spherical fibreglass shell and upholstered interior turn a chair into a small room within a room.

Eero Aarnio is the designer and Ball Chair is the model. Production has passed through manufacturers and licensed editions including Asko, Adelta and Eero Aarnio Originals. Those names describe the maker or edition, not the designer. When assessing a vintage example, labels, shell construction, base, upholstery and production details need to be considered together.

Condition involves more than the visible fabric or leather. Pino checks the shell, surface finish, base and attachment points as well as the interior. Original upholstery may show use, while later examples may have been reupholstered. A restored interior can make a chair practical again, but it should be described separately from a fully original example.
