Karuselli: editions, materials and identification

Yrjö Kukkapuro developed Karuselli during the 1960s as a lounge chair centred on the body and its resting position. The model joined an ergonomically driven practice that made Kukkapuro one of Finland’s most internationally recognised furniture designers. Studio Kukkapuro identifies Karuselli among his key works, and the chair remains a useful reference point for his combination of sculptural form and practical comfort.

Yrjö Kukkapuro is the designer; Haimi and later Avarte are manufacturers represented among vintage editions. Karuselli is the full-size model discussed on this page. It should not be confused with Model 418, often called Pikku Karuselli. Manufacturer labels, bases, shell details, leather and the presence of a matching ottoman help distinguish individual examples.

Vintage Karuselli chairs can retain original leather and padding or show later restoration. Leather may soften, crease and develop colour variation through use. Metal and shell surfaces may carry age-related marks. Pino evaluates the structure, rotation, upholstery and known production details for each piece, and the product page records restoration when information is available.

Current pieces appear above; archived examples show Haimi and Avarte versions, different leather colours and chairs with ottomans. Continue to the Yrjö Kukkapuro collection for related work. If you need a particular maker, material, colour or complete chair-and-ottoman set, use the Karuselli sourcing form.

Karuselli’s sculptural appearance should not obscure its ergonomic purpose. The shell, support and swivel base work together as one system. When comparing examples, the response of the mechanism and the condition of load-bearing parts matter alongside leather, colour and visual patina.
