Alvar Aalto Chair 66 in Birch for Artek

Alvar Aalto designed Chair 66 for Artek in 1935. Made in Finland, this birch chair is a practical example of Aalto’s approach to modern wooden furniture, combining a light visual presence with a sturdy, straightforward construction.

Chair 66 follows the familiar character of traditional kitchen and café chairs while giving the type a distinctly modern expression. Its tall, broad backrest provides support and incorporates a generous opening that also works as a convenient handhold when the chair is moved. The circular seat and gently splayed legs create a balanced silhouette suited to both dining and occasional use.

The chair is constructed in birch, with Aalto’s bent L-leg system connecting the legs directly to the underside of the seat. The pale, warm-toned wood and visible layered seat edge highlight the material and construction. Its compact proportions make it easy to use around a dining table, at a desk or as a standalone chair in a variety of interiors.
