Yrjö Kukkapuro Ateljee Armchair in Black Leather for Haimi

This 1960s Ateljee armchair by Yrjö Kukkapuro combines generous proportions with a light, architectural frame. Manufactured in Finland by Haimi, this example is upholstered in black leather and includes its removable headrest.

Kukkapuro designed the modular Ateljee series in 1963, and it was presented internationally in 1964. The design translates the logic of a tubular metal bed into durable seating that can be dismantled, repaired and extended from an armchair into a sofa system.

The construction pairs a black tubular steel frame with painted wooden side panels, supportive seat webbing and loose upholstered cushions. Rolled padded arms soften the rectilinear frame, while the detachable headrest is held above the back cushion on metal brackets.

The low seat and broad, softly padded form give the chair a relaxed lounge character. The black-on-black finish keeps the silhouette restrained and places emphasis on the leather's naturally developed surface.

Two chairs are available and each is sold individually. Natural differences in patina and signs of use may occur between the two vintage examples.
