Chair 66: construction, versions and vintage details

Alvar Aalto designed Chair 66 in 1935 for Artek. The chair belongs to the birch furniture family developed through Aalto’s experiments with bent wood and the L-leg system. Artek describes it as a universal wooden chair with a wide, handle-shaped backrest: a practical detail that gives support while making the chair easy to move.

Designer, manufacturer and model should be kept distinct. Alvar Aalto is the designer, Artek is the manufacturer and Chair 66 is the model. Authentic vintage examples can come from different production periods and may carry different labels, finishes and seat materials. Birch, laminate, linoleum, reed and upholstery all appear in Pino’s current or archived examples. Those differences do not change the model, but they affect the character, use and condition of an individual chair.

When assessing a vintage Chair 66, Pino looks at the proportions, moulded plywood backrest, birch legs and seat construction together. We also record known repairs, renewed upholstery and surface wear. A softened lacquer, small marks or colour variation can be consistent with age; structural damage should be considered separately.

Use the current grid to see examples available now and the Archive to compare earlier finishes and sets. For wider context, visit the Alvar Aalto collection. If the quantity, finish or production period you need is not available, send a Chair 66 sourcing request.

Artek’s current documentation provides a useful construction reference, but vintage dating still depends on the individual object. Older labels, stamps, joinery, finish and seat material can add context. Pino avoids assigning an exact production year unless the available evidence supports it.
