Yrjö Kukkapuro Experiment Sofa for Avarte
Designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro in 1982, the Experiment series marked a more playful and expressive turn in his work. Created during the rise of postmodern design and produced by Avarte, the series stood apart from Kukkapuro’s earlier softer organic classics with its more graphic structure, exposed metal frame, and bold color accents. The collection was first introduced at the Milan Furniture Fair, where it gained wide international attention.
This exceptionally rare three-seater sofa is a strong example of that shift. It features a chrome frame, black wool upholstery, and striking yellow armrest elements that give the piece its unmistakable character. The construction is light and architectural, while the loose upholstered sections keep the overall feel comfortable and usable. One of the nice details in the Experiment line is exactly this contrast between strict tubular metal geometry and playful sculptural accents, which is what makes the series feel so fresh even now. Surviving sofas are seen much less often than the chairs, which makes this a particularly unusual piece.
This sofa can also be adjusted into a daybed-like configuration, which adds another layer to the original idea of experimentation and flexible living. It works beautifully as a collector’s piece, but it is also genuinely practical in an interior that can handle something a little sharper and more unexpected.
