Artek Chair 69 in Birch with Finger-Joint by Alvar Aalto, 1950s

Artek Chair 69 is a Finnish birch chair designed by Alvar Aalto in 1935. These 1950s examples have compact proportions, broad seats and curved backrests, giving them a straightforward, balanced character suited to dining areas, kitchens and adaptable everyday interiors.

Aalto developed Chair 69 as part of his exploration of bent wood and the L-leg system. The construction allowed the legs to connect directly to the seat while creating a light, durable form that could be produced consistently. The model remains part of Artek’s collection and is made in Finland.

The chairs have a natural birch finish, birch veneer seats and curved birch backrests. Their finger-jointed L-legs form a distinctive construction detail, while the softly rounded seats and restrained profiles reflect Aalto’s practical approach to wooden furniture.

Four chairs are available, each sold and priced individually. They can be stacked for compact storage, making them practical where seating needs to remain flexible. Their 1950s character and finger-jointed construction make them especially appealing to collectors of Aalto and historic Artek furniture.
