Alvar Aalto Finger Joint Dining Table for Artek, 1940s
Vintage dining table designed by Alvar Aalto for Artek, dating from the 1940s. Made in birch, the table features Aalto’s characteristic bent L-legs together with an early double finger-joint construction, a detail associated with older Artek production.
The simple rectangular form and restrained construction are characteristic of Aalto’s approach to furniture design, where practical everyday use is combined with carefully developed woodworking techniques. The warm birch gives the table a particularly soft and understated appearance, making it easy to combine with both vintage and contemporary seating.
This example has been refinished at some point in its history, meaning the current surface finish is later rather than original. The table still retains plenty of vintage character, with visible age-related wear and patina throughout.
