This 1940s Alvar Aalto Table 91 for Artek is a particularly compelling wartime-era example of one of Aalto’s most enduring table designs. In place of the bent L-legs associated with standard production, it features four straight, square-section birch legs secured beneath the round top with layered wooden blocks and a supporting frame.
During the war and immediate post-war years, shortages of materials and skilled labour disrupted Artek’s production and prompted alternative construction methods. This distinctive solution reflects those exceptional manufacturing conditions, making the table a tangible document of Finnish modernism during a defining historical period. Its period-specific construction is central to its historical significance and collector interest.
The table remains unrestored, preserving its original surface and the warm, pronounced patina developed through more than eight decades of use. The visible wear, aged finish and untouched construction form an essential part of its character and authenticity.
